When Life is Life-ing, Do This!
Woods Adisa | JUL 11, 2023

Have you used the phrase “life is life-ing” in the past month?
I’ve heard it from so many folks, and I too, feel like it’s the best way to describe experiencing this day and age.
Many people (self included) use it with more of a negative connotation to say life has been challenging for some reason or another.
In reality though, the phrase is neutral (which makes me love it even more).
It holds the complexities and nuances of navigating life in its completeness - the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
We’re all living our own reality of “life is life-ing”. The problem is experiencing life in a low road capitalistic society that conditions us to believe we need to be “happy” all the time and that happiness is found in temporary pleasures.
Happiness is what people want, but fulfillment is what they need. Or whatever Lauryn Hill said. (IYKYK)
But seriously, if you’re using “life is life-ing” with the negative connotation, it might be a sign of unfulfillment.
Since I was using the phrase “life is life-ing” with the negative connotation, I decided to center a bit more curiosity and came to the question, “What is fulfillment?”
Fulfillment is experienced when we learn how to ride the waves of life, being present with the highs, the lows, and everything in between, yet still choosing to ride the next wave when it comes.
Fulfillment doesn’t require happiness, but it does require skill.
So how does one learn how to ride the waves? How does one become more skillful?
You revel in radical rewilding!
Connect With Your Inner Nature
There are many ways to connect with your inner nature. Here are three practices that can help you become more skilled at riding the waves:
Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness brings mind-body connection in the present moment. It helps quiet the mental chatter, and brings forth more mental clarity and inner ease with practice and consistency.
Movement
Our bodies are brilliant. All over the body, not just the brain, you can find infinite wisdom. Listening to our bodily wisdom brings ease. When we tune into our bodies, we become more aware of our needs and are better able to care for ourselves, and this has a ripple effect that touches everyone in our lives.
Self- Compassion
The white supremacist cis-heteropatriarchy does a great job of nourishing our inner self-critic. That voice is not our true nature. Our true nature is one of love, a voice of self-compassion. Meeting our moment to moment with harsh criticism keeps us from fulfillment. Meeting our moment to moment with self-compassion brings us closer to fulfillment.
Connect With The Natural World
WE OUTSIDE! Like no, we outside, frfr: frolicking/walking/yogging/sitting/laying outside, gardening, hiking, camping, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, bird watching, snorkeling, scuba diving, actual surfing (lol) and so much more. Creating time and space to be in awe of nature’s beauty frequently - in small and large ways - is vital to our overall wellbeing.
Life Is Gone Life
There’s two things I know for sure: 1) life is gone life and 2) radical rewilding helps us be in equanimity as it does so.
There is no magic formula for finding your center when life is challenging (because that’s what folks are really saying when they say “life is life-ing”).
BUT, we can become more skilled at riding the waves so that we have more inner ease and true fulfillment along the journey.
